Matt needs a break…

DHH claims to be an expert on open source, but his toxic personality and inability to scale teams means that although he has invented about half a trillion dollars worth of good ideas, most of the value has been captured by others. Let’s look at 37signals portfolio:

I genuinely hope @photomatt is doing okay. He may have always been this person and I am sure I may have even been in denial in past episodes. However, all his actions suggest someone who is lashing out misreading the environment as totally stacked against him. I hope he has friends pointing out the destruction he’s unleashed: destruction to himself, Automattic, the wordpress community and open source software.

The entire saga started on a flawed premise and his misunderstanding of open source licenses even if you might agree with his moral point around open source contribution. Even if you agree with him, I would argue that the solution was not the escalatory ramp that Matt pursued.

At this point it is about Matt and his mental health and a question if his continued scorched-earth campaign against WP Engine is worth the harm to Automattic (which is about more people than just Matt) and Wordpress community, which is far greater than Matt. I suspect the community is questioning like I am if Matt’s okay and sincerely hope that he has close friends and family asking him to walk off the current metaphorical ledge he’s on.
